~~AFTER 36 attempts Welshman Ian Woosnam has his first US Champions Tour victory, sinking a 30-foot birdie putt in a playoff Sunday to win the 2015 Insperity Invitational.
He had a point to prove really. And he did at 57 years of age who was playing on a sponsor exemption at The Woodlands Country Club in Texas.
Woosnam won the 1991 US Masters, has 29 victories on the European Tour, captained Europe’s winning 2006 Ryder Cup team and has five wins on the European Senior Tour; but things have been lean in the US for a while.
Ian Woosnam wanted to be with his family and relax in his retirement, but now kids are growing up and he can spend a bit more time over in USA. It’s a great Tour and it’s a pleasure to play in he is thankful for the sponsors to give him the invites and, hopefully, he has paid them off.
Woosnam shot a final round 4-under 68 to finish on 11-under along with tour regulars Kenny Perry (66) and Tom Lehman (69) (my mate from the GST Tour in California).
His 30 foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole promptly ended proceedings.
Great feeling, for Woosnam . He knew his game was coming around, so he was a little bit disappointed in the beginning of the week that he was struggling with a bad back, but he managed to dig in and grind through it.
He feels like he is getting a bit too old to go through the pain, but it paid off and he felt a lot better on the last day. He played some great golf and he was fortunate to hole that long putt.
As for my Australians playing in the Champions Tour ;Peter Senior (71) finished the best of the Aussies at 3-under tied for 24th with Steve Elkington (72) not being able to overcome a poor opening round and Tim Elliott blowing out on the final day.
